Different Voices National Music Event

Edinburgh, Sun 28 October, 2012

Origin Scotland is excited to be part of an event next year focusing on enriching our worship and strengthening out outreach, with Steph Macleod and other Origin songwriters leading a session on "Writing Contemporary Hymns".

The Different Voices National Music Event is being held in Edinburgh on Fri 15th and Sat 16th March 2013, with fringe events on the Friday and Saturday evenings. There will be four 'streams' of workshops to ensure that a wide a range of congregations will feel welcome and resourced: Contemporary, Community, Classical and Children’s Music. Our key contributors are Noel Richards, John Bell, Paul Mealor and Fischy Music. Further details about them and a list of all participants can be found on the Church of Scotland website's ‘Music for Worship’ section.

The event will resource anyone involved in local worship or outreach – not just musicians! For example ‘Tot-Tunes’ will enable people who run the crèche to start developing musicality in toddlers from 0-5 years old – a fantastic way to develop the ministry of your crèche volunteers, involve musically minded people and see the children benefit. ‘Including people with dementia in and through music’ will show how congregations with some singers (not just the choir) could offer a place for people with dementia to connect with the world around them through music. This work is especially effective with old hymns where the church possesses a unique gift for this important work. The Friday evening event will model music and arts based worship with the Wild Goose Resource Group and Saturday evening will explore how we might support and resource one another locally and nationally, with music from International Worship Leader Noel Richards.

The entire event is designed to enable Ministers, worship teams, musicians, youth workers, Sunday School volunteers, Guild organisers, Readers etc to reimagine the role that music or musicians can play in enriching our life within the body of the church, or leading us onto new frontiers. Please do sign up yourself and consider inviting others or bringing a group from your congregation who can share in the event together. Churches who wish to say ‘thank you’ to volunteers could book them places at the event perhaps as a Christmas gift. We are offering a £5 discount on such bookings made before 10th December. This stacks with a group booking discount (10 for the price of 9). A concessionary rate is also available for students, pensioners and Priority Area Churches.
